KATHMANDU: Two government surveyors along with other Sherpa climbers today successfully scaled the world’s highest mountain collecting the data for the measurement of height of Mt Everest this morning.

According to Babu Sherpa, Managing Director at Peak Promotion Pvt. Ltd, team leader of the Everest Height measurement Expedition Khim Lal Gautam and Rabin Karki, a member of the team stood atop the summit point at around 3:15 am today.

“The surveyors reached the summit point carrying the height measurement device to collect the necessary data,” Sherpa quoted the members as saying from the high camps.

The team of two surveyors was supported by three Sherpa climbers, he said, adding that Chhiring Jangbu Sherpa, Dawa Sherpa and Lakpa Thindu Sherpa also scaled the mountain guiding the height measurement team.

The Department of Survey will analyse the data collected by the surveyors to reveal the actual height of Mt Everest, Susheel Dangol, Chief Survey Officer at DoS said. It would take a few months to calculate the date, he added.

The team, which has been equipped with GNSS & GPS receivers, is expected to come up with the preliminary height and satellite positioning of the world’s highest peak, according to Dangol. “The team is now descending to the lower camps safely,” he said.

The government aims to measure the ‘exact’ height of Mt Everest amid debates that there might have been a change in its height due to various reasons including the devastating earthquake of 2015. Mt Everest measures at 8,848 metres.
